Role Overview

Anthropic is hiring a Senior AI Research Scientist in San Francisco to focus on mechanistic interpretability, reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), and safety evaluation benchmarks for large foundational models.

Key Responsibilities

Design, conduct, and analyze empirical experiments on model interpretability and reward model hacking
Scale evaluation test suites to identify reward tampering, sycophancy, and jailbreak vulnerabilities
Publish peer-reviewed research papers and collaborate with technical safety evaluation bodies
Work alongside infrastructure engineers to optimize training runs on GPU clusters

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or equivalent peer-reviewed publication track record (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL)
Hands-on expertise training and fine-tuning multi-billion parameter transformer models in PyTorch
Strong coding skills in Python, distributed compute frameworks (Ray, Megatron-LM), and CUDA optimization
Demonstrated research contributions in model steering, representation engineering, or preference optimization
